Enjoying the sunshine in Mexico City

Thursday, 8 August 2013 3:43 PM

If there's one thing for which holidays in Mexico and Central America are renowned its sunshine. Thanks to their location in the Tropic of Cancer, these two regions get plenty of rays, as well as scorching hot temperatures, throughout the year.

For those visiting from northern Europe, it's important to make the most of this favourable weather. While doing so on the coast is fairly self-evident - head to a beach - finding the best places to catch a few rays in a bustling metropolis such as Mexico City is perhaps a little trickier.

Fear not, however, as the following guide will introduce you to the top locations to dine al fresco, work on your tan and do some exercise.

Best place to dine al fresco

When the weather is warm (Mexico City's average highs are in the 20s all year round) there's nothing like taking your dinner outside and enjoying a few drinks in the balmy evening air.

One of the best places to eat al fresco in Mexico City is the San Angel Inn, a 17th-century hacienda that was converted into a restaurant in 1963, after having previously been used as a monastery and pulque (an alcoholic drink made from fermented agave sap) factory.

As well as having an intriguing history, the San Angel Inn, which lies on the south-western edge of the city, also have a fabulous courtyard for outdoor dining. Tuck into delicious Mexican delicacies such as ceviche, Aztec soup and chicken in mole sauce washed down with gorgeous margaritas and martinis.

Best place to sunbathe

Mexico City is one of the most heavily populated urban areas on the planet, with more than 20 million people living there. This puts it in the global top ten ahead of cities such as Sao Paulo, New York and Moscow.

As you can imagine, there's a lot of buildings and roads in Mexico City spread over a large area but in Bosque de Chapultepec (Chapultepec Park) you'll have no problem finding a green space on which to lay your towel and enjoy a spot of sunbathing.

One of the largest parks in the world, with an area of more than 1,600 acres, Chapultepec is one of the city's main attractions and has forests, lakes and landmarks to explore.

These include the Monumento a los Ninos Heroes (Monument of Young Heroes) built to honour six young cadets who refused to surrender to American troops during the Battle of Chapultepec in 1847 and Castillo de Chapultepec (Chapultepec Castle), a former imperial palace and presidential residence. There's also a zoo and several museums.

Best places to exercise

Unsurprisingly, the park is also the perfect place to get some exercise in the fresh air. Hire an ecobici (eco-bike) from one of the many stations located across the city and then head into the park for a cycle around the forest.

There's even a suggested route for visitors to follow on their bikes starting at Puerta de Leones (Lion's Gate) and heading via Banos de Moctezuma (Baths of Moctezuma) and the Totem Canadiense to Fuente de las Ranas (Frog Fountain).

After checking out the sights in the hectic city centre, the chance to escape to this hilltop oasis will come as a great relief - especially if you're a sun worshipper!
