Seclusion in Alicante

Saturday, 3 August 2013 11:09 AM

Alicante has a reputation among British holidaymakers as one of the most stunning destinations in Europe. Beautiful beaches, turquoise waves and a buzzing atmosphere all come together to make a gorgeous holiday location. The availability of cheap flights to Alicante such as these hasn't hurt either.

But this reputation has proven to be a double-edged sword for those who like their beaches quiet and secluded. Those who have an inflated definition of the phrase 'personal space' often find themselves researching smaller lesser-known holiday destinations, but there's no real need to. Dig a little deeper into what Alicante has to offer, and you'll find a number of quiet beaches away from the noise and party atmosphere. Check out a few of the hidden gems below.

Playa Almadrava

Hidden away from the crowds and well off the main road, the part-pebbly and part-sandy beach of Playa Almadrava is a beautiful piece of quiet heaven. Very few tourists venture here, partly due to the lack of any on-beach services and lifeguards. Swim out to the little island in front to look for sea urchins if you're feeling adventurous. Otherwise, fetch your towel and bed down on the sand for a good day of reading.

Playa la Albufereta

This little stretch of sand is in a sheltered cove just adjacent to Marina. It's sheltered from the wind, so it feels extremely hot when the temperature really soars. Make sure you bring plenty of water. Of course, this protected nature also helps it to maintain a shroud of secrecy when it comes to tourists. Sat in the cove, it's easy to feel safe, protected and far away from the crowds.

Playa Muchavista

Arriving at Playa Muchavista from the town side, you may wonder how on earth this beach made it onto this list of secluded spots as it's generally packed. Venture down the other end, however, and the crowds seem to magically thin out as you get further from the toilets and restaurants. Of course, it's longer to walk if you actually need to make use of these things. For the most convenient toilet facilities, head into the sea!

Arenales del Sol

One of Alicante's wildest - and most unspoilt - beaches, this gorgeous stretch of sand is the very epitome of natural beauty. The dunes and vegetation make for an area that looks untouched by human hands. You could easily imagine yourself in the Sahara if you pick a spot where you can't see the sea - and to top it all off, it's very quiet. Find a dune to sit behind and get down to some well-deserved sun worshipping.

Situated on the south part of the Alicante coast, this sandy beach occupies a long stretch of coastline, ensuring you plenty of space and impressive views towards Alicante harbour and the castle of Santa Barbara. Far from the bustling city centre, it's a fantastic place to relax. There's also a nudist section, for those who are so inclined.
