Top places to visit on the Croatian coastline

Monday, 5 August 2013 7:09 AM

Croatia is growing in popularity as a destination as people from the UK flock to the country in order to see what all of the fuss is about. Boasting almost 1,800 km of coastline along the Adriatic Sea, it is no surprise holidaymakers are keen to check out some of the 1,100 islands on offer.

Read on to find out what are some of the top places to visit:

Dubrovnik
Situated on the Dalmatian Coast, this is an ideal location for people looking for last minute cheap Croatia holidays. It frequently comes high on lists of the most beautiful cities in the world and is seen as the star attraction of the Dalmatia region. Some of the smash hit TV show Game of Thrones has also been filmed in the city.

Surrounded by defensive walls, which are now under the protection of UNESCO, visitors can enjoy the Mediterranean climate, check out the Renaissance period parks and enjoy the flowering gardens. The old town is also car free and so is an excellent location to go for a nice walk.

Split
Split is recognised as one of the most vibrant cities to visit on a Croatia holiday. Also located on the Dalmatian Coast, it has a well-known Saturday market, superb beaches and the Riva esplanade - which is lined with cafes and bars.

The city is noted for historic events and monuments, as culture is an important part of the area's tradition. Split is also an intraregional transport hub, as it is a link to numerous Adriatic islands and the Apennine peninsula. This means people planning a long stay in one of the more remote locations could still visit Split for a day.

Sibenik
A historic town on the River Krka that flows into the Adriatic Sea, there are 240 isles and reefs located near the area. A dream place for fans of yachting, it is the place to go if you want to meet the best coral hunters in the world.

For people looking to do something a little different, why not venture out to the Kornati Archipelago, which is described by the Croatian National Tourist Board as an "experience like no other". The  Krka National Park is also located only a few kms away from Sibenik centre and this area is well known for its waterfalls, flora and fauna.

Zadar
Home to the oldest university in Croatia, Zadar has a number of historic collection, libraries and archives in the country that are sure to get your cultural juices flowing. Alfred Hitchcock, the famous director for The Birds and Psycho, said the town was home to the most beautiful sunset in the world.

Don't forget the beach...
Of course, people going on holiday are typically looking to relax. This is where the Croatian coastline comes into its own, as it offers long stretches of sand and sea perfect for a summer vacation and those looking to build up their tans.

Watersports activities, such as jet skiing and parasailing are also offered in case people fancy setting their pulse racing. The coast has so much to offer that people are virtually guaranteed to have a good time, so it's really a case of getting it booked and waiting for the big day.
